Yes, it has been a while. I’ve been a bit overwhelmed by life for a good many weeks now and so ##%^*(^&%$$ frustrated over the nonsense coming out of Washington regarding alleged “health care” reform that I had to shave my head to keep from pulling my hair out.
Today, I saw a piece from Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus that really summed it up well. Mr Knight is a compelling and eloquent writer and speaker. Religious affliations aside, this is a guy folks ought to be paying more attention to. He writes:
“A health care system, willing to sacrifice tomorrow’s children for today’s financial gain, a system more concerned about costs than people can hardly be called health “care.”
Americans, born and unborn, deserve better than to be seen in terms of their cost. The American people deserve a health care system that truly supports health, that upholds the dignity of all — a system that leads to the protection — rather than the depletion of — America’s most important resource, its people. That is the fundamental reason why so many Americans supported the idea of health care reform in the first place. As Washington draws closer to enacting a new law, it should keep faith with that promise.”
Well said, sir. Why is abortion such a sticking point in this debate? Do lawmakers who quip that aborting babies saves us money in the long term really think that such a train of thought has any logic to it whatsoever? Could elected officials be so arrogant and ignorant not to see what such thinking has done and continues to do around the globe? To paraphrase a statement earlier in the same piece … this truly is special interest politics at its poisonous worst. I simply refuse to believe our elected officials have fallen that far.
If you’ve not encountered Carl Anderson before, pick up his book “A Civilization of Love” (you can get to it directly from the link to the right). While it is quite an indictment of what we’ve become as a society, it does offer hope by calling things what they are and offering hope to change course.
